CHILDREN & CANALS & SAFETY
|
Children & Canals
Children just love a canal holiday and the family can have great fun
together, working as a team, especially at the locks. Being out
in the fresh, open air all day will tire them out and they’ll
go out like a light at bedtime. Be ready for big appetites though!
Safety First
Safety is a priority for TILLERMAN and as part of your training we will
make sure you are aware of the safety considerations so that you and
we have peace of mind whilst you enjoy your holiday.
We
provide life jackets for the under 12 year
olds and for those adults that prefer to
wear one – however remember the canals
are only about 5 feet deep so if you do accidentally
fall in then stand up. The boats are checked
annually and are safety certified. We will
explain what to do in the unlikely event
of an emergency and make sure you know how
to pass through the locks safely. Provided
you follow our procedures there is nothing
to worry about.

Blackwater
Meadow
The Blackwater Meadow Marina is ideally situated at the middle of the
46 mile long Llangollen Canal (now in the top 100 holiday destinations
worldwide!) – a canal experience bettered nowhere with plenty
of historic structures along your route. The most spectacular is the
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct built in 1805, which crosses over the River Dee
some 130 feet below. Other spectacles include the Cherk Aqueduct and
Chirk Castle – walk on to the Horseshoe Waterfalls at the head
of the canal at Llangollen or take a trip on the steam railway. Beautiful
scenery, picture postcard villages and plenty to do including the 21
locks and Blackwater Meadow make a centre for canal holidays difficult

Alvecote
Alvecote is situated on the Coventry Canal in a peaceful, rural setting
on the Warwickshire and Staffordshire borders. From here, there
are many varied cruising routes into and around the heart of the
extensive Midlands canal network. Within a short distance there
are as many as five colourful canals, each one blessed with its
own unique character. Whichever one you choose, you will be captivated
by what is around the next corner. You will enjoy a warm welcome
at Alvecote and, as at all Tillerman marinas, be provided with
route maps to guide you through your personal journey.NOTE: Start

Union
Wharf
Union Wharf with its impressively refurbished canal warehouses and excellent
restaurant is a hive of quality boating activity. Situated in Market
Harborough, Leicestershire.
This pretty and traditional English market town dates from 1203. Enjoy
delicious food, and fine ales in the town's historic coaching inns or
just potter about the market and the many fine family owned shops in
this gem of a town. It is just two hours cruising to the 'Leicester Line'
of the Grand Union Canal from this beautiful and tastefully restored
terminus of the 'Market Harborough Arm'. The friendly lock keeper at
the famous Foxton Locks opens the gate to the world ahead and away you
go.
